Celebrate Father’s Day with Better Sleep [BLOG]

Snoring & Sleep Apnea Solutions 2 | Smile Creations | Neenah, WI

Happy early Father’s Day to all you dads out there. If you’re not a dad, but you’re struggling to find yours the perfect Father’s Day gift, Smile Creations may have an answer for you. A man only needs so many ties, right? He can only wear one at the time.

Why not give Dad a gift that will not only make him feel better, but will also improve his health? Yes, sleep apnea and snoring treatment with a custom oral appliance from our Neenah, WI dentist office could fit him perfectly.

Snoring doesn’t necessarily mean that Dad is suffering from sleep apnea, although the two conditions often go together. Studies have shown that 24 percent of men will suffer from sleep apnea (This number is actually from an older study that doesn’t take obesity rates into consideration, so the real number may be higher).

So, if you hear him sawing logs in his sleep, it could be a sign of sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Interrupts Precious Sleep

Episodes of sleep apnea occur when a person’s airway becomes blocked during sleep. It is normal for the soft tissues in the back of the throat to relax and drop down while sleeping, however sometimes this movement blocks the airway and prevents breathing. Age, gender (men are more likely to have sleep apnea), body type, and family history are all factors that play into this condition.

After a few seconds without breathing, the brain signals the body to wake up enough to take a few breaths. After taking in some oxygen, you drift off to sleep again – until the process happens all over.

This cycle can repeat itself over 50 times each hour in people suffering from severe sleep apnea – usually without them even knowing it! The sufferer wakes up tired and groggy and may feel more depressed and moody throughout the day.

But that’s not all!

Research has shown that sleep apnea also plays a large role in the development of serious health conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Dad’s sleep apnea could already be contributing to these health concerns without his (or anyone else’s) knowledge.

Get Dad Relief With an Oral Appliance

Smile Creations can help Dad. You might wonder why you should seek treatment at a dentist office. The reason is that we are fully qualified and capable of delivering safe, effective sleep apnea and snoring treatment with a simple oral appliance.

We feel so strongly about getting our patients the treatment they need that we will perform an initial screening for sleep apnea at no cost to Dad or you. If it seems that he could be suffering from sleep apnea, we will work with his physician to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

If sleep apnea is the cause of his sleep disturbance and snoring, we will custom-fit him with an appliance that will gently push his lower jaw forward while he sleeps. This will help keep his airway open, resulting in a better night’s sleep and less (or no) snoring. That means everyone else in the house may sleep better, too!

Our Treatment Provides an Option to CPAP

One of the best parts of our treatment is that Dad may be able to avoid using a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. This device combats sleep apnea by pumping a steady stream of air into the throat to keep the airway open.

CPAP is effective, however many sufferers have trouble getting used to it. So much so, that they sometimes give up on treatment.

The custom oral appliance we make for Dad is an effective alternative to a bulky, noisy CPAP machine. Plus, it’s easily portable for overnight trips and vacations!

We love dads! Let’s help them get better sleep with sleep apnea treatment. Call Smile Creations today at 920-243-4122. You can also request an appointment via our web form.
