If, like us, you were glued to the TV on Sunday watching the 90th Academy Awards, you may have noticed not only the actors’ glamorous gowns, elegant tuxedos, and glowing skin. As dentists, of course, the first thing we look at is a person’s smile. And in Hollywood, there is a definite dearth of crooked, stained, and unattractive teeth.
The good news is that flawless smiles are not just for movie stars. At Smile Creations, we have the cosmetic dental options you need to make your pearly whites worthy of a jaunt down the red carpet — or just a night out on the town here in Neenah, WI.
Two techniques, dental veneers and tooth bonding, are especially effective multitaskers, capable of hiding an array of problems. Gone in a single procedure are chips, cracks, discoloration (even deep stains not helped by chemical teeth whitening), gaps, mild crookedness, and other blemishes.
Here we discuss both procedures in depth.
Dental Veneers Are at Home in Hollywood
Veneers have a very special connection with La La Land. They were actually created there. Around 1930, Los Angeles dentist Daniel Pincus had to find a way to make actors’ teeth look good on the big screen. Back then, due to poorer oral hygiene and lack of the cosmetic and restorative dental techniques we now take for granted, it was common for even famous people to have decayed and lackluster smiles. And that is not a good thing for a romantic close-up.
So Dr. Pincus invented the first veneers. Unlike today’s, these were temporary and would be removed upon the end of filming. It wasn’t until the 1980s that permanent veneers became practical with advancements in bonding and etching technology.
Today, thanks to their truly transformative effects, veneers are enormously popular in Tinseltown — and with regular people around the country.
A dental veneer is a very thin shell-like cover that we bond to the front of a tooth. You can go all out and get a whole new smile, or you can treat just one or a few problem teeth.
At Smile Creations, we use highest-quality porcelain veneers. This material combines extreme durability with a totally lifelike appearance on your teeth. It mimics the appearance of real tooth enamel perfectly, with just the right amount of translucence. The process takes a couple of visits to our Neenah, WI office.
- Before proceeding with treatment, we will need to make sure your teeth are healthy enough to receive veneers. Dr. Eike will perform a thorough examination of your mouth.
- Your teeth will need to be prepared for their veneers. In order to ensure they fit properly and look natural, we will remove a small amount of enamel from the front of each tooth to be treated. As we touch only the outer layer of the teeth during this process, it should be painless. But we do have local anesthetic and dental sedation if needed.
- Once your teeth have been trimmed, we will take non-invasive digital impressions and create a precise model of your teeth. This is sent to a trusted dental lab, where your veneers are custom-crafted out of porcelain.
- When your beautiful veneers arrive at our office, we will have you come in for another appointment. Dr. Eike will check that each veneer’s fit and color is a perfect match to your teeth and make adjustments as needed. He will clean and etch each tooth and bond the veneers using a special dental cement that’s hardened with light. He will check your bite, remove excess adhesive, and trim if necessary.
Your veneers will look and feel natural. With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, they may last decades.
Tooth Bonding Is an Excellent Alternative
Tooth bonding is a painless and non-invasive process in which we use a composite resin to cover blemishes, stains, gaps, and other cosmetic dental complaints. After your tooth is prepared, we will apply the putty-like material, carefully molding and shaping it. The resin is cured using a special light, and once it’s hardened, the doctor will make any necessary adjustments. Finally, we will polish the composite material so it’s indistinguishable from your natural enamel. We are able to precisely match the resin color to that of your teeth.
Tooth bonding is quick, generally doable just one dental visit. It is less expensive than porcelain veneers and does not require removal of your enamel beforehand. With good care, bonding will last several years.
